Dr Martin Blake

Head of Sustainability and Environment

Royal Mail Group plc

Martin has over 20 years experience in business management, Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability. While living and working in the Middle East he undertook two distance learning degrees with Hull University and completed his MBA in Organisational Analysis and Strategic Management and his Doctorate in Business (DBA) which focused on Organisational Change. He is a Member of the Institute of Directors and a Fellow of both the Chartered Institute of Management and the Royal Society of Arts

For the last four years he has headed the Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability Team at Royal Mail and designed and implemented an award winning Carbon Management Programme to combat climate change. Royal Mail is the largest single employer in the UK and it has one of the largest fleets of trucks and vans in Europe, with 35,000 vehicles transporting 85 million pieces of mail to 27 million addresses, from the Isles of Scilly to Benbecula. Royal Mail’s Carbon Management Programme is a holistic approach comprising nine interrelated projects, focusing on eliminating, reducing and replacement. All Royal Mail sites now run on green electricity and almost half of its vehicle fleet runs on biofuel; the objective is for Royal Mail to become carbon neutral by 2015.

Martin also set up the Social Policy Strategy for Royal Mail and is himself deeply involved in charity work, especially focusing on equal opportunity for socially excluded groups.
