Joanna Yarrow

Sustainability Director

IKEA UK & Ireland

Joanna Yarrow leads the sustainability agenda for IKEA in the UK and Ireland. Her role is to help deliver the home furnishing retailer’s objectives to become a more sustainable company, as well as advising IKEA customers on how they can live a more sustainable life at home.

IKEA has been committed to sustainability for many years and through its ‘People and Planet Positive’ strategy will continue to use sustainability to drive innovation, transform its business and shape its investments.

Central to the strategy is helping IKEA customers become greener at home.  The home furnishing retailer is making its sustainable products affordable, widely available and exciting in order to help its customers to save and generate energy, save water, reduce and sort waste whilst saving money, saving time and feeling good.

Joanna is a founder of the sustainability company Beyond Green which provides strategic advice to clients ranging from city leaders to the Olympics.  She has long specialised in sustainable living and making green, healthy lifestyles both attractive & accessible to the broadest audiences through consultancy, broadcasting, writing & practical projects.

Joanna presented BBC3’s Outrageous Wasters and has appeared on a range of lifestyles & current affairs programmes including this Morning, GMTV, Daybreak, ITV Tonight & Five News, covering consumer-focused sustainability stories. She is the author of 1,001 Ways You Can Save the Planet, How to Reduce Your Carbon Footprint & Eco-logical! – books designed to make green living easy & accessible for a broad range of readers.

Joanna studied Human Sciences (MA) at Oxford University & has a Masters in Leadership for Sustainable Development from Forum for the Future. In 2008 she received an honorary doctorate from Staffordshire University in recognition of her work on sustainability & climate change.

Commenting on her role with IKEA, Joanna comments:

"I'm passionate about making greener, healthier lifestyles attractive and accessible to as many people as possible. IKEA plays a role in millions of households’ daily lives. The scope of the operations & the massive reach has the potential to achieve practical & cultural change on an enormous scale – within our own operations but also crucially by helping our customers live more sustainably in their own homes.”
