Since March 2007 Steven has been Head of New Energy and Clean-tech Research for the investment banking division of Matrix.  As well as publishing research on listed companies Steven is involved in analysing private companies looking for investment and leads the Matrix-Foresee Alliance, a JV developing energy outsourcing and consulting opportunities.  He is also on the board of Autonomic Materials Inc., a US company commercialising self-healing materials.

Prior to joining Matrix Steven worked in energy efficiency and renewable energy for more than 25 years.  Steven’s PhD was concerned with the potential for energy efficiency in UK industry and he subsequently worked as an energy manager and a consultant, implementing energy management programmes for many corporate and public sector clients.  Notable achievements include:

    Implementing multi-site energy management programmes.  Largest client had 1,500 major buildings and an annual spend of £60M (in 1992), savings of 15% were achieved.
    Co-founding two energy service companies (ESCOs), one in the UK which is now part of RWE npower, and one in Romania which is now one of the leading industrial ESCOs in Romania.
    Development and project management of innovative multi-utility outsourcing project across three breweries for Diageo that reduced energy consumption on one site by 40%.
    Development and implementation of a five year energy management project for Sainsbury’s which reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 11% per square metre.
    In 2002 Steven led the team from Enron Energy Services that had implemented the Sainsburys and Diageo contracts in their transition to RWE Solutions, managing RWE, the team and the clients in order to create a successful business for RWE.
    Developed and implemented energy efficiency programmes for Romania funded by EU, UNDP, World Bank and USAID.
    Co-founded early wind farm developer in UK (1990).
    Publishing over 100 articles and papers on energy, environment and space issues including contributions to a text book.  His first book; “Outsourcing of Energy Management” was published in March 2007, published by Gower.

Steven has a BSc in Science of Resources (specialising in energy resources) from the University of Birmingham, a Diploma in Technological Economics and a PhD from the University of Stirling, and a Post-graduate Certificate in Sustainable Business from the University of Cambridge.  He is also a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the Energy Institute.
